Whether you are a small social enterprise, or a hugely successful company, digital marketing, search engine optimisation, social media and web design techniques are changing fast, and by sticking to the old ways you could be missing out and even penalising yourself for using out-of-date or ‘bad’ techniques. Here are just a couple of digital marketing trends that are most definitely a thing of the past…

Text-heavy web content

Huge paragraphs of dense text may be relevant and informative to your product or service, but only if your audience is actually reading it. People are put off by huge chunks of text, and there has been a shift towards using more visual aids to attract consumers. This isn’t just true for websites either, with the rise of social media sites for business such as Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest, it is obvious that consumers favour a more visual experience.

For websites that do require a lot of text information, it’s best to break text down using visual aids, and sticking to the main points is essential. This gives the user a more interactive and visual experience, and one they will remember (or at least read.)

Mobile versions of websites

Users want an integrated experience, and switching to a mobile-version website is simply not enough anymore. Web designers should focus on creating an innovative and responsive design with mobile-first in mind, with over 50% of internet use in the UK coming from mobile devices, it would be a crime not to offer a fully integrated design to users.

It has even been suggested that Google will reward you for having a responsive and integrated website as there is less chance of duplicated content across multiple sub domains. Optimised sites for mobiles and tablets are now a necessity, and even thinking about web design without this in mind would be a huge mistake.

So, how do I keep up to date?

Although trends are changing rapidly, you don’t have to be left behind! There are loads of ways online you can find out about new digital marketing techniques in order to implement these into your strategy.

Set up Google Alerts for digital marketing and search engine optimisation. This will keep you up to date with the latest news and blogs surrounding these key words. Read blogs on sites such as Forbes and Econsultancy, these blogs are often written by professionals (that really know their stuff). Social media sites such as Twitter and Linkedin also offer loads of information and feeds regarding new trends, so make sure to educate yourself and keep up-to-date with what’s happening.

The most important thing is to be completely ready and responsive to changes. It can be easy just to stick to what you know, but in the digital world you have to change quickly, trust me, your competitors will get there first.
